Career Track

Firefighter

Career firefighters work 24-hour shifts across the department's two stations, responding to fire, medical, rescue and hazardous materials calls. Every career firefighter and officer is licensed through the State of Michigan as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, and the department's specialist teams cover technical rescue, hazardous materials, marine operations and the drone program.

Minimum Requirements

  • State of Michigan Firefighter I and II certification
  • State of Michigan EMT or Paramedic licensure
  • Valid Michigan driver's license
  • Successful background investigation, physical and medical evaluation
  • Willingness to work 24-hour shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
Career Track

Part-Time Firefighter

Part-time firefighters supplement the full-time crews and work in 12 or 24 hour increments according to their availability and the needs of the department. It is how many of the department's firefighters begin, and part-time staff make up a substantial share of the personnel on duty on any given day.

Minimum Requirements

  • State of Michigan Firefighter I and II certification
  • Medical licensure is not required, but EMT or Paramedic licensure is valued
  • Valid Michigan driver's license
  • Successful background investigation
  • Availability for 12 or 24 hour shifts
Career Track

Public Safety Dispatcher

Dispatchers answer 911 and non-emergency calls for Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore police and fire, 24 hours a day. New hires complete the Communication Training Officer program including 40 hours of Emergency Medical Dispatch training. Dispatch is shared between the police and fire departments.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to type accurately while handling radio and phone traffic
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule
  • Successful background investigation and skills assessment

  2. Attend a Recruiting or Information Session

    The department holds part-time firefighter hiring and information events. Dates are announced on the Events and News pages and on the department Facebook page.

  3. Background Investigation

    Candidates who move forward complete an interview and background investigation, followed by physical and medical evaluations for firefighter positions.

  4. Training

    New firefighters train with their crews in the department's daily, company and specialty training, which totaled more than 4,300 hours in 2025. New dispatchers complete the Communication Training Officer program with Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.

Do I need Firefighter I and II certification to apply?

Yes. Both full-time and part-time firefighter positions require State of Michigan Firefighter I and II certification. Full-time firefighters must also hold an EMT or Paramedic license; for part-time firefighters it is valued but not required.
