Brian D. Bassett

Director Brian D. Bassett is responsible for overseeing all public safety operations in Chesterfield Township, which include both the Police Department and the Fire Department. He brings more than 24 years of public safety experience to the role, 13 of those years at the executive level.

Before accepting the position in Chesterfield Township, Director Bassett served the City of Sylvan Lake as Chief of Police. Prior to that he spent many years with the City of Southfield, ultimately retiring from that department as Deputy Chief. That career spans line work, supervision and executive command in three different communities.

Director Bassett earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration from Wayne State University and is a graduate of both the FBI National Academy and the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. He most recently completed a Master of Public Administration at Central Michigan University.

Under his direction the department completed interior and exterior renovations of the police station in 2025, added eight cadets, four police officers and four part-time firefighters, welcomed Chaplain Kim Fleece to the peer support program, and introduced Chester, the department's comfort K-9.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction for the entire Department of Public Safety, including police and fire operations
  • Oversees department budget planning, purchasing, accounts payable and cost recovery
  • Brings personnel, equipment and policy items before the Township Board of Trustees
  • Sets training priorities and standards for officers, firefighters, dispatchers and civilian staff
  • Directs policy review and both accreditation programs: MLEAC for police and CFAI for fire
  • Oversees building security, facility management and information technology
  • Leads community outreach and maintains partnerships with residents, businesses and elected officials
  • Publishes the annual Department of Public Safety report
