Lieutenants

Company Officers

Lieutenants serve as company officers on the department's shifts, supervising crews on fire, medical, rescue and hazardous materials responses.

About the Lieutenants

Lieutenants are company officers on the department's 24-hour shifts, supervising the firefighters assigned to them and leading crews on fire, medical, rescue and hazardous materials responses from both stations.

Because the department cross-mans its apparatus, company officers decide which vehicle a crew takes to each call, following the Computer-Aided Dispatch response plan for that emergency type, and support the Battalion Chief as officer-in-charge on larger incidents.

Every career firefighter and officer in the department is licensed through the State of Michigan as either an Emergency Medical Technician or a Paramedic, so company officers lead medical responses as well as fire and rescue calls.

Responsibilities Shared by All Lieutenants

  • Supervise firefighters assigned to their company
  • Lead crews on fire, medical, rescue and hazardous materials responses
  • Select the appropriate apparatus for each call under CAD response plans
  • Maintain State of Michigan EMT or Paramedic licensure
  • Support the officer-in-charge on emergency scenes
