A permit is required for open burning of brush, branches, leaves and yard clippings, and is only issued during the spring and autumn burning windows.

All open burning in Chesterfield Township must be conducted safely and without nuisance, under a permit issued by the fire department.

Permits cover April 1 to May 21 and October 1 to November 22 each year. Burning is daylight hours only and must be completely extinguished before sunset. Campfires no larger than four feet in each dimension do not need a permit.

What You Will Need

  • The address where burning will take place
  • Burning only of brush, tree stumps, branches, yard clippings, leaves and grass clippings
  • A site at least 50 feet from the nearest building
  • Constant supervision by a competent person at least 18 years of age
  • Wind speeds of 15mph or less, confirmed with the department on windy days
